St Louis Rams Preseason Could Define Ticket Sales

twitterfacebookreddit

Preseason is usually a time of the season that doesn’t matter. Fans watch as they get to see their teams in action, with new additions, but mostly the back-ups and special teams units. Some fans love preseason, some fans think it is a complete waste of time. This year, however, is completely different for the St Louis Rams. How the Rams do in the preseason could completely affect so many levels of gears and wires that ultimately could cost St Louis a team.

CBS St Louis reports that over 8,000 tickets have gone unsold for the home opener against the Seattle Seahawks. This number is not as bad as it sounds, as last year the St. Louis Rams home opener only had an attendance of just over 56,000. Over 57,000 tickets have been sold so far, but CBS still seems to think that the numbers are too low. Fans aren’t buying tickets for many reasons, including the lack of vocal support from the organization and owner Stan Kroenke. It also doesn’t help that the Rams have not mustered a winning season since 2003.

So how does preseason come into play? I cannot speak for the fans that don’t want to throw money at a team that might possibly leave, but I can’t however speak to the fans who don’t want to watch the team lose. Preseason could make or break the ticket sales. The home opener has no reason not to be sold out, it is against a division rivalry and the first game of the year.

If the team shows up to play, then fans will come and watch. Right now however, there are just too many what-ifs on this team. How will Nick Foles do? How will Todd Gurley do? How will the new offensive line hold up? Can the defense play at a consistent rate? These are all questions that can be answered in the preseason.

If Nick Foles stays upright, can deal with the young offensive line, and make accurate passes, then Rams fans should be excited enough to come. Most Rams fans know the team has been a quarterback away from the playoffs for many years.

Also, what happens if Todd Gurley rushes up the middle, breaking four tackles for a 60 yard touchdown? Does anyone think ticket sales won’t boost after watching that?

This is one of the youngest units in the game, and with so many new pieces on board, it will take some time to connect. I don’t expect the team to really start connecting until the final two preseason games. If that happens however, those 8,000 tickets shouldn’t be around much longer.

From then on, it will be on the Rams shoulders to sell tickets. They must win games.
