Cardinals Trade for Relief Pitcher Jonathan Broxton

The St Louis Cardinals traded for Brandon Moss yesterday, but they apparently they are not finished. According to sources, the St Louis Cardinals have acquired relief pitcher Jonathan Broxton from the Milwaukee Brewers.

Broxton has pitched well lately, despite having a 5.89 ERA on the season. He has been spun around the National League Central quite a bit, considering he was traded from Cincinnati before he joined the Brewers. He is the second relief pitcher the Cardinals have traded for this season, so it appears the Cardinals have concern there.

In exchange for Broxton, the Cardinals are giving up cash considerations and minor league outfielder Malik Collymore. The Cardinals continue to give up prospects for aged veterans, which some would look at and not be too high on. Collymore was struggling this season, batting only .216 in the minors, so the 27th ranked prospect in the Cardinals organization needed some work.

On the other hand, the Cardinals starting pitching has been phenomenal, with lacking support from their injury-riddled bullpen. So it’s hard to be mad at the Cardinals for addressing a dire need.

The Brewers just keep dealing. They traded Carlos Gomez yesterday and have 3-5 more players on the market they could move before the deadline. It would appear the Cardinals might be just tightening up the screws for a team they know can win the World Series.

The organization wants no stone unturned. The trade isn’t as exciting as some are, but it addressed a need and gives the Cardinals more pitching depth, something you can never have too much of.
