St Louis Rams Special Teams Coordinator John Fassel Saves Drowning Man
By Nic Moody
John Fassel can apparently do it all. The St. Louis Rams special-teams coordinator has a reputation in the league for being one of the best in the game at trick plays and special-teams dominance. The coaches love him, the players love him, even most of the fans love him, and now there’s even more reason to love him.
John Fassel was boogie boarding on the coast of California when he noticed a man in distress, and immediately swam over to him alongside a surfer named Jim Burton. Fassel and Burton were able to assist the man and swim him to shore, where the fire department was waiting to stabilize him.
According to the report, the man was only seconds away from drowning before Fassel and Burton arrived, according to Fassel, the man’s eyes were “rolled in the back of his head” and was completely unresponsive when approached. Fassel helped by grabbing the man’s arms, and the surfer Burton pulled the man out by his waist, where they stabilized him on the surfboard long enough to paddle to shore.
The two never got the name of the man they saved, and it looks like they probably never will. However, they did get the chance to meet each other, which they hadn’t ever met before the incident occurred. (Burton and Fassel)
The Rams report for camp this week, and Fassel was enjoying his last week on vacation before he had to report also. Fassel continues to impress on, and now off, the field.
