Cardinals-Mets Recap: Buy Three Get One Free
By Nic Moody
Even though the schedule will only show three games in the St. Louis Cardinals series against the New York Mets, it was technically four games that were played. The Cardinals were able to win the first two games of the series, but the final game of the series stretched 18 innings, which is the equivalent of two full baseball games. The New York Mets would ultimately come out on top, but the Cardinals still came out of the All-Star break strong.

Lance Lynn started on the mound for St. Louis in game one. Lynn may have given up a leadoff home run to Curtis Granderson, but that would be the only mistake he made all game. Lynn went on to pitch seven full innings, only giving up three hits, striking out nine. It would take the St. Louis Cardinals until the sixth inning to tie the game, as Matt Carpenter grounded out to first scoring Kolten Wong. Jhonny Peralta would then Homer a solo shot to left-center, giving the Cardinals the lead.
The Cardinals bats really came alive in the second game. The Cardinals would win the game 12-2 while Jason Heyward would get five hits including two RBIs. Randal Grichuk hit two homeruns in this game, bringing his RBI total up to 32 on the season. (6 in the game alone) John Lackey had mixed results pitching. On one hand, Lackey only gave up one run over seven innings, but gave up ten hits in the process. Still a strong outing either way.
The third game is why we love baseball. This game would go on for 18 innings. The New York Mets would ultimately win despite leaving 25 men on base. The first run of the game was not even scored until the 13th inning, in which the Cardinals would immediately respond with a Kolten Wong solo homerun in the bottom half to keep the game going. In the eighteenth however, Ruben Tejada would hit a sacrifice fly to score Flores, and Campbell would sacrifice bunt on the next play, leaving the Cardinals with a 3-1 loss.
The Cardinals will likely be tired after the 18 inning game they suffered today, but the Cardinals look sharp coming out of the All-Star break, which is exactly what fans wanted and the Cardinals needed.
