Matt Holliday Not Participating in All Star Game
By Nic Moody
St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday will not participate in the All-Star game this year. Although Holliday has rightfully earned his place in the starting lineup, his quadriceps injury is just too big of a risk for the game in Cincinnati. This comes as no surprise, as the St. Louis Cardinals have been trying to get Holliday back in their lineup for the last couple weeks, and will not risk him getting hurt for an exhibition game.
The All-Star break will also give a few extra days for Matt Holliday to heal. He went through an extensive workout on Friday, and Manager Mike Matheny seemed to be very pleased with his progress. If Matt Holliday is truly close to returning, it makes complete sense to keep him out over the All-Star break. Here’s what Cardinals General Manager John Mozeliak said Saturday:
"“He’s an All-Star and we’d love to have him back in the lineup. But I don’t want to have him back for a day or two and then find out he’s going to be out for a longer period of time.”"
Matt Holliday is batting .303 this year with 26 RBIs and three Home runs, which likely means his on-base streak of 45 games earlier this season was a major reason he got the All Star vote.
The Cardinals have survived without him, but they desperately need him back as the Pittsburgh Pirates drew within four games last night after The Cardinals blew two late leads in both the tenth inning, and the fourteenth inning respectively.
