Ranking the Top 15 Edge Rusher Prospects in the 2015 NFL Draft
Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports
6. Za’Darius Smith, 6’4, 274, Kentucky
I believe that Smith is the most underrated edge rusher in the draft, as he may be a safer bet to consistently contribute as a 4-3 end than any player in this class besides his fellow Wildcat, Bud Dupree. Smith’s physical skill set makes him a fantastic fit to fit in a 4-3, and he could also provide added value by contributing as an interior rusher on passing downs.
Smith shows a strong burst off the line of scrimmage, uses his hands well, and has good closing speed once he has a clear path to the player with the ball. He has experience working at every position along the line, and at worst he’ll be a versatile spot player.
Smith’s biggest issue is finishing the play once he’s in the backfield. He needs to do a better job of lowering his hips and completing the job once he’s gotten past blockers. He also needs to work on maintaining a good pad level and becoming more disciplined as a run defender.
Because he played only two years of Division I football and was overlooked by many due to the presence of Dupree on Kentucky’s defense, Smith will likely slip a bit farther than he deserves to in this year’s draft, but he’s going to provide a surprisingly high amount of value to whoever decides to take a chance on him.
