St. Louis Rams Closing Evaluations: What Grades Do the Cornerbacks Receive?
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
Trumaine Johnson: Johnson, who was projected to be the Rams’ top corner entering the season, missed the first seven games of the year after suffering an MCL injury. He was solid after returning, however, and he went on to get into the starting lineup for five of the last nine games.
The third-year corner had 36 tackles, six passes defended, and a team-leading three interceptions, including one that he ran back for a touchdown. Johnson didn’t have many glaring coverage mistakes, though he was not too highly thought of by Pro Football Focus, which gave him a -3.2 coverage grade while pegging him for one touchdown allowed over 443 snaps.
Johnson made an admirable midseason return from a rather serious injury, and his performance was solid over the latter half of the season. With that said, he’ll need to make sure that he performs well next summer as he aims to retain a starting spot while facing competition from E.J. Gaines, Janoris Jenkins, and Lamarcus Joyner.
