2014 NLCS:

3. 40. Final. 2. 33

After a comeback San Francisco Giants victory in Game 4 of the 2014 NLCS on Wednesday night, the Giants and St. Louis Cardinals will face off again on Thursday in what could potentially be a decisive Game 5. It will be a great pitching matchup, as it will be a rematch of the Game 1 duel between Madison Bumgarner and Adam Wainwright, both the aces of their respective staffs.

Wainwright wasn’t terrible in the series opener, but he was no match for Bumgarner, who was absolutely dominant against the Cardinals. Bumgarner threw 7.2 shutouts innings with seven strikeouts and one walk, compared to Wainwright’s three runs (two earned) allowed on six hits, three walks, and two strikeouts over 4.2 innings.

It’s worth noting, however, that Bumgarner is much less effective at home. While he was a dominant 11-4 with three complete games, a 2.22 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP on the road this season, Bumgarner was just 7-6 with a 4.03 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 15 home starts this year. In addition, he struggled in his home start in Game 3 of the NLDS against the Washington Nationals, taking the loss while allowing two earned runs and a third unearned which really should have been earned, due to the fact that his errant throw past third base allowed the runner to score.
