Trade Deadline Notes: Red Sox trade P Jon Lester and LF Jonny Gomes
By Darrel Craig

The Boston Red Sox have traded pitcher Jon Lester and left fielder Jonny Gomes to the Oakland Athletics for left fielder Yoenis Cespedes.
While I understand the Red Sox side here, I don’t understand why the Athletics would trade away their clean up hitter and young stallion. Jon Lester is a great addition, but swapping Gomes for Cespedes is not going to put in them over the top in the AL.
In all reality for the A’s, this is just a half season rental of Lester in hopes to have postseason glory, which seems to be a common factor this day in age in all sports, but the chance of him re-signing with them at the end of the season is slim to none and slim had already walked out the door back to Boston.
The Red Sox will re-sign him at the end of the year and come out major winners in this trade. They pick up a young star in Cespedes, who is going to excel at Fenway Park. He’s a major upgrade from Jonny Gomes, not to mention, the fans are going to love him. Only time will tell how this works out for both teams, but the way I see it is a loss for the A’s and a major upgrade for the Red Sox.
