12. David Shields, D

23 years old, re-signed as RFA to $600K/$75K two-way contract

Shields is in a similar situation to Regner as a defenseman that is pretty far down the Blues’ organizational depth chart. However, he is younger and has more marketable skills than Regner, so he probably has a better shot at getting an NHL chance at some point. He has above-average size at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, and he also showed the potential to be somewhat of a scorer last season, knocking in five goals in 55 games. If the Blues face an injury crisis on defense and Hakanpaa and Edmundson aren’t NHL-ready yet, Shields has a slim but feasible chance to see an NHL call-up.
