2014 MLB Draft, Day 1: Start Time, Live Stream, TV Info and More
Thursday kicks off the annual MLB Draft. While many will argue that baseball’s draft is the least compelling of any of the four major American sports, with even the first round having a high failure rate, the MLB Draft has picked up a rather significant amount of traction in terms of media coverage in recent years. While the entirety of the draft was done via conference call just a few years ago, it’s now developed into a primetime television broadcast on MLB Network, and all 40 rounds are now covered in depth by MLB.com.
This year’s draft should be intriguing for the St. Louis Cardinals, as they’ll have two first day picks: their normal first rounder at pick 27, and a compensatory pick at 34 overall that they were awarded for the offseason loss of right fielder Carlos Beltran to the New York Yankees. The Cardinals seem to like to keep their draft plans under wraps, but it wouldn’t be at all surprising if they targeted more college pitching, seeing as they’ve taken righthander Michael Wacha and lefty Marco Gonzales with their previous two first picks. With the amount of adversity that their pitching staff has continued to face, it would be wise to consider stocking up on mechanically advanced starters who can help offset the lack of depth in the upper minors sooner than later.
