Rams Select SMU QB Garrett Gilbert in Sixth Round of 2014 NFL Draft

The St. Louis Rams selected SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert with the 38th pick of the sixth round, 214th overall, in the 2014 NFL Draft. Gilbert, who originally attended Texas and played in the 2010 BCS National Championship Game, transferred to SMU after losing Texas’s starting job and having shoulder surgery. He had a very good 2013 season, throwing for 3528 yards, 21 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions. Gilbert will likely compete for a spot on the Rams’ 53-man roster as the third quarterback behind Sam Bradford and Shaun Hill. As a sixth-rounder, however, he may be a player that ends up on the practice squad unless he has a very strong preseason that makes the Rams think he’ll get stolen on waivers.
The Rams now have four more selections in the seventh round, two of which are compensatory selections and therefore cannot be traded. Look for them to possibly increase their depth at defensive end, offensive line, wide receiver, and tight end.
