In anticipation of Spring Training, Arch Authority is previewing every position group on the St Louis Cardinals. Today we will preview the third base position.
Projected Starter: Matt Carpenter
Potential Backups: Daniel Descalso
Prospects Pipeline: Stephen Piscotty, Carson Kelly, Patrick Wisdom
Outlook:
Matt Carpenter is making the switch to third base after playing last season at second base. Matt Carpenter is probably the best utility player in Major League Baseball because of his hitting ability and ability to field multiple positions. Daniel Descalso is the only other Cardinal on the 40 man roster that played at third base in 2013. Jhonny Peralta has played third base in his career but hasn’t played it since 2010 so I doubt he will spend any time at third base. The Cardinals are rich in the prospects pipeline at third base. Carson Kelly, Stephen Piscotty and Patrick Wisdom all have an ETA of 2014 to the majors. Not everyone can get playing time but Matt Carpenter’s flexibility, the St Louis Cardinals can move Carpenter around and get these prospects valuable playing time at the MLB level. Piscotty played third base in 2012 and could be use to play at third base if the Cardinals wanted to get Piscotty playing time.
