The St. Louis Cardinals were able to salvage a game against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday winning 8-4. Unfortunately, the Cardinals lost the series to the Cubbies and have won 5 out of their last 18 games.

Struggles continue for the Cardinals

One night it’s hitting, the other it’s pitching. Either way the Cardinals find ways to lose games. On Friday, the Cardinals couldn’t score any runs even though they out hit the Cubs 7 to 5.  On Saturday, the Cardinals jumped out to 4-2 lead heading to the 8th inning. In the next two innings, the Cardinals relievers were not able to hold the lead giving up 4 runs in the final 2 innings. No matter what, the Cardinals can’t find ways to close out games. Something is wrong. The Cardinals front office finally did the right thing and called up Michael Wacha, but Mike Matheny won’t put him in the starting rotation. I am dumbfounded by that assertion. The bullpen needs help, but Westbrook is a liability as a starter.

Best pitching performance: Lance Lynn

Lance Lynn pitched a good game on Friday night but still loaded the bases on Friday and his shaky 7th led to the only runs scored in the game. None of the starters had a “WOW” start and while the stat line doesn’t look good for Lance Lynn, he did pitch a very good game. Mike Matheny left Lance Lynn in too long throwing 115 pitches. Still doesn’t take away from his first 6 innings.

Series Epilogue

Well the Cardinals get an off day but it should be taken to figure out what if anything can be done to stop the bleeding. Yes, the Cardinals are still in the lead for the Wild Card and it looks like it won’t have much competition from anyone outside of the Reds but this isn’t a guarantee. There are no excuses for this and if the Cardinals want to make some noise in the playoffs, the time is now to figure it out.
