The St. Louis Rams training camp has begun, Arch Authority will breakdown key position groups and battles that will define the 2013 St. Louis Rams. Today we will breakdown the Rams defensive backs.
Starters: Janoris Jenkins and Cortland Finnegan.
Reserves*: Trumaine Johnson, TJ McDonald (rookie), Rodney Mcleod, Robert Steeples (rookie), Quinton Porter, Matthew Daniels, Darian Stewart, Brandon McGee (rookie), and Matt Giordano.
*Not all reserves are listed.
Outlook:
The two known starters for the Rams in this position group could be considered elite defensive backs. Cortland Finnegan had 3 interceptions last year and constantly got in the heads of the opponents. Janoris Jenkins had 14 pass deflections and 4 picks, 3 of which were returned for a touchdown. After losing Craig Dahl to the 49ers and deciding to cut Quintin Mikell, the two safety positions are wide open. Darian Stewart looks to be the favorite for the strong safety position. I believe that TJ McDonald will win the starting free safety position job. I also expect Trumaine Johnson to have another strong year like he did last year as the 3rd cornerback and maybe get some time at free safety if TJ McDonald struggles. I expect the defensive backs to be a force in the NFL this year.
