The Cardinals split the series with Arizona with a 12-8 win
In baseball, the goal for most teams is split the even numbered series (2 and 4 game series) and win 3 game series. It was also Larussa’s method. The Cardinals were able to salvage a split with the Arizona Diamondbacks. After winning the first game of the series, the Cardinals lost a 14 inning game and got blown out in Joe Kelly’s spot start in the place of Shelby Miller. Shelby Miller pitched 6 innings with 9 strikeouts. Shelby gave up 2 runs (both earned) in the first inning. He also added his first career home run in the 5th inning.
The middle relief in the Cardinals bullpen is still a work in progress as Seth Maness had 3 runs charged to him in the 7th inning after 5 straight hits for the Diamondbacks. And in the 9th inning, rookie Keith Miller gave up 3 earned runs after walking 3 straight batters. Edward Mujica came in with the bases loaded in a save situation and closed the door on the Diamondbacks.
The Cardinals select 2 left handed pitchers in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft:
Most of the Cardinals top pitching arms are right handed. So it would make sense to draft some left handed pitching. The Cardinals selected Marco Gonzales (19th Overall), Rob Kaminsky (28th overall), and Oscar Mercado (57th overall) in the first day of the 2013 MLB Draft.
Here is Marco Gonzales’s tweet when he found out the news:
What up #cardinalnation!!! I am honored beyond words to be your first choice! Can't wait to get after it! #STL

Here is Oscar Mercado’s tweet to Cardinals fans:
Thanks to all those who supported me! It was an absolute blessing and couldn't be happier! Go cards!!!!

Baseball experts have praised these 3 prospects and don’t believe the Cardinals reached on any of them. In fact, most feel that the Cardinals got a steal for Gonzales. Although this is exciting times for the Cardinals, we must be hesitant to thinking we will see these prospect soon or even as Cardinals.
