Mandatory Credit: Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports The Saint Louis Billikens are winning with regularity, and have established some national clout. They’re 23-5 (12-2 A-10) on the year, and have won their last 11 straight. With the season’s end just two games away, there is a tsunami of Billiken momentum headed for the NCAA Tournament.
Behind the statistical star junior forward Dwayne Evans, who earned the A-10’s player of the week award for last week after posting double-double’s against both Saint Joseph’s and George Washington, the Bills pushed their AP Poll stock up from 18th to 16th. They are playing as a team unit and defenses cannot combat their generous scoring efforts.
While there is no single star to this squad, Evans is leading the team with 12.6 PPG and 7.2 RPG. Last week, against Saint Joe’s, he racked up 21 points and snagged 12 rebounds, while against GW, he hit 22 point and again grabbed 12 boards. The young star was a powerful annoyance against GW causing 4 turn overs, which was a career high.
With only two games left, the first at Xavier at the second at home verses La Salle, the Billikens are moving into March in the shape they need to be. The ranking last week didn’t seem to shake their confidence, and I’m betting, the two spot increase won’t have any negative effects either. This team is a focused beam of winning shinning right at the top of the NCAA Tournament. Look out NCAA…the Billikens are here.
