Every St. Louis Cardinals minor-league team that played on Saturday came away with a victory. Highlights included a spectacular start by Double-A righthander Trey Nielsen, a professional debut for the ages by this year’s sixth-round pick, Tommy Edman, and the extension of an impressive hitting streak by Dominican Summer League outfielder Brian Sanchez. The day also included a concerning development, though, as outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker was forced to leave his first minor-league game of the season after being hit by a pitch.

Triple-A Memphis won 6-4 over Iowa

  • In his first game back with the Redbirds, Jeremy Hazelbaker was forced to exit in the fourth inning after being hit by a pitch in the bottom of the third. He was replaced by first baseman David Washington, whose entrance forced Jose Martinez to shift to left field and Charlie Tilson to move to center.
  • Martinez (2-for-3 with a walk) and Tilson (2-for-4) were the only two players in the Redbirds’ lineup Saturday to collect multiple hits, and both of them doubled. The Redbirds’ other two extra-base hits came from Carlos Peguero, who hit a three-run homer in the third inning, and Dean Anna, who doubled in the fourth.
  • Starter Alex Reyes wasn’t exactly spectacular on Saturday, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and two walks in 4.1 innings. On the bright side, he did strike out six hitters.
  • After reliever Kurt Heyer gave up two earned runs in the sixth, four Redbirds relievers–Corey Littrell, Ryan Sheriff, Miguel Socolovich, and Sam Tuivailala–combined for three and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief.

Double-A Springfield won 1-0 over Northwest Arkansas

  • The Cardinals shut out the Naturals for the second straight day, this time behind righty Trey Nielsen, who bounced back from a series of four straight mediocre outings to throw six shutout innings on Saturday. Nielsen allowed just two hits and walked another two while striking out eight.
  • Nielsen was backed by three scoreless innings of relief from Pedro Echemendia, John Brebbia, and Josh Lucas. Those innings would have been entirely perfect if not for a ninth inning walk from Brebbia.
  • The Cardinals had just six hits on Saturday. Catcher Mike Ohlman, who collected Springfield’s only two walks, was the only player on the team to reach base twice, and DH Carson Kelly doubled for the team’s only extra-base hit.

High-A Palm Beach was off for the Florida State League All-Star Game

  • Catcher Steve Bean was the only Cardinals position player to appear in the game, going 0-for-1 with a strikeout.
  • Starter Austin Gomber tossed a perfect third inning, striking out one. Closer Rowan Wick appeared in ninth inning, recording one out while allowing a hit and a walk before giving way to Marlins prospect Esmerling De La Cruz.

Class A Peoria defeated Burlington 8-3

  • Starter Ryan Helsley delivered a spectacular performance, allowing just one unearned run over six innings. Helsley allowed eight hits and walked one while striking out seven.
  • Eliezer Alvarez, who went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and four RBI, was the offensive star of the night for the Chiefs. Six of the Chiefs’ nine hitters reached base multiple times, and one of the players who didn’t, DH Brian O’Keefe, recorded a double for his 10th extra-base hit of the month.

Short-Season Class A State College defeated Williamsport 6-3

  • Three more 2016 Cardinals draft picks made their respective professional debuts on Saturday: shortstop Tommy Edman (Round 6), catcher Jeremy Martinez (Round 4), and center fielder Mick Fennell (Round 22). While serving as the designated hitter, Edman delivered by far the most impressive offensive performance of the night, going 4-for-5 with two doubles.
  • Left fielder Ricardo Bautista was the other Spikes player to collect multiple hits on Saturday, going 2-for-4 with two doubles.
  • Righty Carson Cross started for the Spikes and allowed three earned runs on seven hits and a walk through six and a third innings.

DSL Cardinals won 8-4 over DSL Braves

  • Eight of the Cardinals’ nine hitters reached base, and first baseman Leandro Cedeno (4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI), left fielder Carlos Luis (3-for-5 with a double and RBI), and DH Raffy Ozuna (3-for-5 with a double and two RBI) stood out offensively.
  • Though he failed to collect multiple hits for the first time since June 9, right fielder Brian Sanchez extended his hitting streak to eight games.
  • Lefty Diego Cordero had a strong start, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks while striking out seven hitters in six innings.
