The St. Louis Cardinals organization went a collective 0-4 on Thursday, as a combination of poor offense and poor pitching doomed teams across the system. Two starters, Trey Nielsen and Austin Gomber, had uncharacteristically bad starts, while J.C. Sulbaran and Brennan Leitao delivered strong efforts but just didn’t get enough run support.

Triple-A Memphis lost 4-1 to New Orleans

  • J.C. Sulbaran had a fantastic start start, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out six in six shutout innings. Lefty reliever Corey Littrell followed him with two perfect innings. Unfortunately for Sulbaran and Littrell, reliever John Church gave up four runs (three earned) during a disastrous top of the ninth, putting a game that had been scoreless out of reach for the Redbirds.
  • The Redbirds had just four hits. Carlos Peguero went 2-for-3 and collected the team’s only multi-hit effort, while David Washington hit a solo homer in the ninth to give the Redbirds their only run.

Double-A Springfield lost 5-3 to Midland

  • First baseman Luke Voit went 3-for-4, while third baseman Jonathan Rodriguez went 2-for-4 and had his first homer since being demoted to Springfield on May 29.
  • Center fielder Harrison Bader had an 0-for-5 day. He’s just 1-for-10 with four strikeouts since taking a pitch off his hand on May 31.
  • Springfield starter Trey Nielsen had his worst start since early April, allowing 12 hits and walking two in six innings. He was able to control the damage relatively well, though, giving up five runs (four earned).

High-A Palm Beach lost 8-3 to Bradenton

  • Palm Beach starter Austin Gomber got roughed up, allowing six earned runs on six hits and four walks over six innings.
  • DH Allen Staton had the only extra-base hit of the day for the Cardinals, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

Class A Peoria lost 3-1 to Wisconsin

  • The Chiefs had no extra-base hits, and second baseman Eliezer Alvarez and third baseman Dylan Becker were the only two Peoria hitters to have multiple hits.
  • Peoria’s Brennan Leitao had a quality start, allowing three runs (two earned) in 7.1 innings while giving up six hits and one walk.
