St. Louis Cardinals’ Randal Grichuk to have MRI on Right Elbow

Erstwhile Rookie of the Year candidate Randal Grichuk had a minor setback on Sunday. Grichuk left the Cardinals’ 6-4 loss to Miami with right elbow tightness in the eighth inning. Manager Mike Matheny stated that the Cardinls don’t know what they are looking at, but had to be cautious. He stated “[Grichuk] could’ve gone up and hit again, but not at the risk of throwing him out defensively.” Grichuk will have an MRI in the near future to determine if the soreness is anything the Cardinals need to worry about.

If the soreness does turn out to be a problem, the Cardinals will be in a bit of trouble. Grichuk has quietly put together a solid case for Rookie of the Year; he is batting .284 with 15 homers, 44 RBI and a .333 OPS. He also has a 3.1 WAR, the 5th best on the team. In addition to his offensive prowess, Grichuk has been a solid option defensively for an outfield racked by injury. Grichuk has played in 84 games this season, mainly serving as a platoon option during Matt Holliday‘s multiple periods on the disabled list.

The Cardinals’ outfield has been something of a revolving door;  no less than eight men have played in the Cardinals outfield this season. Of the eight, Grichuk has the most home runs, most RBI, and the second-most hits. If Grichuk does go on the disabled list for any length of time, it will be a huge blow to the outfield. The Cardinals outfield would then have three of its members on the disabled list right as the season kicks into its final gear and the Cards look to hold on the number one seed in the National League and hold off the Pirates and Cubs, who have been surging. The hope would then be that he, along with Matt Holliday and Jon Jay, are ready for the playoffs.
