St. Louis Cardinals-Kansas City Royals Recap: For One Night Only!

Beware the perils of only throwing three pitches. Chris Young threw 4-seam fastballs, sliders, and a scarce changeup during his outing against the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Cardinals made him pay dearly. The Cards knocked two homers off the Kansas Royals starter, who lasted only three innings.

The game didn’t start off too well for the Cardinals. The Royals took Lackey to task in the first inning, scoring two runs on Salvador Perez and Alex Rios singles. Lackey was effective the rest of the night, lasting seven and only giving up those two runs.

The Cardinals struck back in the 2nd inning. Randal Grichuk homered off of a Chris Young fastball to bring Jason Heyward home and tie it at two. Matt Carpenter decide to join in on the fun in the third inning, belting another two run homer to right field. To start the fourth, the Royals replaced Young with Kris Medlen. Medlen did not start off too much better.

To start his night, Medlen gave up a single to Randal Grichuk, and threw a wild pitch allowing Grichuk to advance to third. However, the mistake was made moot when Salvador Perez picked Grichuk off. Medlen would later get out of the inning despite walking Dan Johnson. Aside from multiple walks, the rest of Medlen’s night was quiet. Franklin Morales entered in the sixth, and spent one inning on the mound. He was replaced by Luke Hochevar in the seventh.

Hochevar had a slightly more rocky night than Morales or Medlin. Hochevar gave up a Kolten Wong single and a walk to Matt Holliday, but that was the extent of his troubles. The Cardinals made their first pitching change in the seventh, sending in Randy Choate for the hold. But after one batter Mike Matheny changed his mind and sent in Seth Maness instead. Maness then finished the inning by forcing yet another double play and handed the reins to Trevor Rosenthal.

Rosenthal would make things interesting in the ninth. He would give up an Omar Infante triple that brought Alex Rios in to make the score 4-3. Jarrod Dyson would then walk on four pitches. Dyson would quickly steal second base. The Cardinals would get out of the jam. Dusty Coleman would strike out, Infante would get caught at home, and Mike Moustakas would ground out to end the game.

There’s not much to made of a makeup game, but the Cardinals looked good tonight. Lackey continued to be solid, and the bats took advantage of a few mistakes by the opposing starter. A good win for the Cardinals. They keep the momentum going into their series with the struggling Braves.
