Rams Have “No Interest” in Signing Evan Mathis

The St Louis Rams allegedly have no interest in Pro Bowl guard Evan Mathis, who was released earlier in June by the Philadelphia Eagles. A source close to Bleacher Report told Jason Cole that the Rams are interested in building what they have, and have no interest in other signings. This honestly comes as no surprise to some Rams fans. It is obvious (and smart) for the Rams to use their added beef they obtained in the draft to build an offensive line for the future. The offensive line may be inexperienced, but they will not have any issues blocking for Gurley out of the gate, and that’s what coach Jeff Fisher is counting on.

No one is claiming that Mathis wouldn’t make a fine addition to the St Louis Rams roster. He would do wonders compared to Davin Joseph, who I’m convinced couldn’t block his way out of a paper sack. The issue remains that Mathis would not come cheap. He has Pro Bowl experience, and feels like he could play another few years, and at 33 years old, this is not what the Rams need. The Rams have taken chances on veterans like Jake Long and Scott Wells, and although they performed great in their youth, they did not hold up that well as age grew on.

Rams have a talented core, and need to simply utilize them. Fisher chose these guys and he’s sticking with them, which could set up the offensive line for a long time in St Louis. The Rams offensive lineman is full of athletic, tall, and muscled men, who just simply need some training, both on the field and off.
