St. Louis Rams Trade QB Sam Bradford

It is official: the St. Louis Rams traded quarterback Sam Bradford and two draft picks to the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday in exchange quarterback Nick Foles and two picks (a 2015 fourth-round pick, and a second-round pick in 2016).

In what was one of the most chaotic beginnings to free agency in recent history, the Rams made numerous moves to free up cap space by cutting veteran Center Scott Wells and tackle Jake Long. Those moves, along with Bradford’s release, helped save nearly 30 million in cap space, allowing the Rams to re-sign tight end Lance Kendricks to a four year deal worth a reported $18.5 million.

The Rams now have an estimated $30 million in free cap space to make more moves and re-sign free agents (like Kendricks).

The move may shock more Eagles fans than Rams fans. Many believed that the Eagles would position themselves for a trade to land Marcus Mariota of Oregon in this year’s draft. They now have Mark Sanchez and Sam Bradford for the time being.

While it has gone under the radar, the Rams also saw Shaun Hill depart for the Minnesota Vikings, leaving currently Nick Foles and Case Keenum (also acquired Tuesday) as the only two quarterbacks on the Rams active roster. The Rams may look to the draft to add one more quarterback early. In many mock drafts the Rams are expected to land Marcus Mariota at the 10th pick overall or via trade.

As mentioned earlier, the Eagles will get two picks. According to league sources the Eagles will get a 2015 4th-round pick no matter what, and a conditional pick in 2016 based on Bradford’s playing time.

Just a few hours into free agency and the Rams, along with many other teams are making moves. What are your thoughts?
