St. Louis Rams Release DT Kendall Langford

In a rather unsurprising turn of events, the St. Louis Rams have released defensive tackle Kendall Langford. The 6-foot-6, 313-pound Langford had 101 tackles and eight sacks during his three years in a Rams uniform. He had combined with 6-foot-5, 326-pound Michael Brockers to form a formidable defensive tackle during 2012 and 2013.

Langford, however, became expendable when the Rams selected Aaron Donald with the 13th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. With Donald, who became a Pro Bowler and won the 2014 Defensive Rookie of the Year Award, becoming the team’s primary 3-technique defensive tackle, Langford was reduced to a much smaller rotational role, especially after he lost his starting job to Donald in Week 5. Langford finished the season having played 494 snaps, roughly 300 less than he had played per season in his two years as a starter.

Langford was scheduled to make $6 million in 2015, which would have been a steep price for a backup defensive tackle. He had already received all the guaranteed money from a four-year, $24 million-dollar contract that he signed with the Rams prior to the 2012 season.

With Langford now officially released and Alex Carrington, who was the fourth-string defensive tackle in 2014, hitting the unrestricted free agent market once again, it’s likely that the Rams will be in the market for two defensive tackles this offseason. Those needs could be filled through the draft, though the front office has shown through their additions of Langford in 2012 and Carrington in 2014 that they’re not afraid to acquire defensive tackles on the free agent market.
