Adam Wainwright: Unfortunately Adam Wainwright’s success was overshadowed a bit in 2014 due to the once-in-a-generation regular season performance by Clayton Kershaw and a similarly elite postseason run by Madison Bumgarner. That’s a shame, because it really was a treat to watch the 33-year-old right-hander during 2014.

Wainwright posted career bests in ERA (2.38), shutouts (3), WHIP (1.031), and batters average against (.222). He also matched his career high in complete games with five. Though it was apparent at times that Wainwright was dealing with elbow soreness (which he had minor surgery on after the season), he didn’t let that deter him from dominating nearly every time that he took the mound. He received the honor of starting the All-Star Game, and he went on to finish third in Cy Young voting and eighth in MVP balloting.

It’s easy to get spoiled by Wainwright because he seems to deliver such a consistently good performance year-in and year-out, but Cardinals fans need to appreciate exactly how good the big righty is and enjoy his success while it lasts.
