St. Louis Cardinals: Kolten Wong out until after All-Star break

The Cardinals will be without their second baseman for at least another few weeks.

As Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on Wednesday evening, the St. Louis Cardinals will be without their starting second baseman much longer than initially expected:

"Mejia figures to be here for a while because Mozeliak said second baseman Kolten Wong, who is on the 10-day disabled list with a right triceps strain, will not be rejoining the team until after the All-Star break in mid-July although Wong might still go out on a rehab option before then. “I thought it would be sooner,” admitted Mozeliak."

Wong went on the disabled list back on June 15 with an injury that he believed would cost him little more than the requisite 10 days. Obviously things have taken a turn for the worse since then, as he’s now missed 13 straight games and still will need to go on a rehab assignment before he returns to the major-league club.

With Wong on the DL and shortstop Aledmys Díaz optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, Greg Garcia figures to get the bulk of the starts at second base for the near future, though career minor-leaguer Alex Mejia, who was recalled to replace Díaz, could also fit into the mix. Depending on if Mike Matheny is willing to move first baseman Matt Carpenter around the diamond, it’s also theoretically possible that either Carpenter or Jedd Gyorko could see time at second.
