The St. Louis Cardinals made a fairly non-dramatic first addition to their expanded September roster.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Friday morning that they’ve activated first baseman Matt Adams from the 15-day disabled list, making him the first addition to their expanded September roster. Adams had been on the DL since August 11 with left shoulder inflammation.

Adams has had some definite bright spots during 2016, including a month of May during which he slashed .364/.411/.652, and a walk-off homer in the 16th inning of the Cardinals’ July 22 game against the Dodgers. It’s safe to say he’s still had his fair share of struggles, though; he’s hitting just .193/.292/.386 with two homers since the All-Star break.

Since Matt Carpenter seems to have taken over as the Cardinals’ primary first baseman, with Brandon Moss generally moving in from the outfield if Carpenter plays second or third, Adams will likely see most of his action off the bench for the rest of the season. The lefty slugger can definitely be an asset there, as he’s hitting .385 with two homers in 26 pinch-hit plate appearances this season.

During a five-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis prior to rejoining the Cardinals, Adams hit .188/.350/.438 with a home run in 20 plate appearances.
