Outfielder Anthony Garcia and starting pitcher Austin Gomber were the star prospects in the Cardinals’ system on Monday.

The Cardinals were 2-6 across the minor-league system on Monday, and the day was largely bereft of standout performances. With that said, 40-man roster member Anthony Garcia had a breakout day at the plate for Triple-A Memphis, while lefty Austin Gomber continued his impressive run at High-A Palm Beach.

Triple-A Memphis lost 6-2 to Iowa

  • All five of the Redbirds’ hits came from two players: first baseman Efren Navarro and outfielder Anthony Garcia. Navarro went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, while Garcia went 3-for-4 with a solo shot.
  • Corey Baker, making a spot start in place of Jerome Williams (who had been called up by the big-league club earlier in the day), delivered a solid performance, allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and two walks over seven innings. Baker threw 109 pitches, 69 of which went for strikes.

Double-A Springfield won 9-4 over Tulsa

  • The Cardinals had 11 hits on Monday, and they broke the game open with four runs in the eighth inning. Standout performers included Nick Martini (2-for-5 with a homer), Luke Voit (1-for-5 with a homer), and Jonathan Rodriguez (2-for-4 with a double and two runs driven in).
  • After throwing a complete game on Wednesday, starter Trey Nielsen stuck around for a long while again on Monday, throwing eight innings while giving up four earned runs on nine hits and no walks. It’s a mystery as to why the Cardinals keep letting Nielsen go deep into games when he’s not really dominating, but nevertheless, he’s shown that he’s got enough stamina to be trusted as a starter.

  • A Casey Grayson double was the Cardinals’ only extra-base hit of the day, while left fielder Vaughn Bryan (2-for-5) and third baseman Cole Lankford (2-for-4) were the only players in the lineup to collect multiple hits.
  • Lefty Austin Gomber had another fantastic start for Palm Beach, giving up three earned runs over 7 1/3 innings while allowing just three hits and walking none. Gomber struck out none while throwing 100 pitches.

Class A Peoria lost 9-8 to South Bend in Game 1 of a doubleheader

  • Shortstop Jose Martinez (3-for-4 with two doubles), DH Chris Chinea (2-for-4), and catcher Jose Godoy (3-for-4) were the standout offensive performers for Peoria in Game 1.
  • Starter Brennan Leitao had a rough go of it, allowing six earned runs on nine hits and a walk through six innings.

Class A Peoria lost 9-2 to South Bend in Game 2 of a doubleheader

  • First baseman Chris Chinea was the only Chiefs player with an extra-base hit, collecting his 18th double of the season. Magneuris Sierra was the only Peoria hitter with multiple hits, going 2-for-4.
  • Starter Dailyn Martinez got knocked around, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings.
