The Minnesota Vikings have selected Mizzou linebacker Kentrell Brothers in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

The Minnesota Vikings have selected Missouri Tigers linebacker Kentrell Brothers with the 21st pick in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft (160th overall). The 6-foot, 245-pound linebacker led the nation in total tackles (152) and tackles per game (12.7), but his draft stock was soured a bit by a 4.89-second 40-yard dash at the combine. Even with his poor combine performance, it was still somewhat surprising that Brothers didn’t receive more serious early-round consideration due to his sheer production and the obvious athleticism that he’s showcased over the past few years.

Brothers is the first linebacker to be drafted out of Mizzou since the Tennessee Titans selected Zaviar Gooden in the third round of the 2013 draft, and he was the third (though likely final) Tiger to be selected in the 2015 draft, following center Evan Boehm, who went to the Arizona Cardinals in the fourth round, and lineman Connor McGovern, who went to Denver in the fifth.

Brothers will join a Vikings team that features perhaps the best group of 4-3 linebackers in the NFL with starters Anthony Barr, Chad Greenway, and Eric Kendricks, but for now he’ll at least try to compete for a special teams role with guys such as Audie Cole, Brandon Watts, and Edmund Robinson.
