Stephen Piscotty appears to be ok.

On Monday night, St Louis Cardinal fans had one of the biggest scares in their baseball watching careers. On a ball hit to deep left center field, both outfielders Peter Bourjos and Stephen Piscotty were running full speed to the gap, in an attempt to catch the ball and save an important possible run. Bourjos caught the ball, but at a huge price, as he collided with Piscotty, in one of the ugliest collisions baseball has ever seen. The knee of Bourjos went full speed into Piscotty’s head, knocking him unconscious. Piscotty was carted off the field, and gave a wave to the crowd as he exited the left field tunnel.

With Cardinal fans in a worried panic, the St Louis Cardinals rallied behind three runs in the ninth inning to secure a huge win over Pittsburgh. Cardinal fans still awaited news on Piscotty’s condition however. All the tests came back negative on Monday night, a very good sign. Piscotty was then told he would be kept overnight to monitor for further evaluation. Piscotty was released Tuesday with only “a couple of bruises” to worry about. The doctors checked him out and Piscotty appears to be fine in what could have been a career-ending play.

Peter Bourjos said this after the game:

"“We couldn’t hear each other, the ball was just hit between us, and we both tried to make a play on it. The situation in the game, I think we both thought if the ball fell it might be the outcome of the game. You could just tell that Stephen wasn’t right and that he needed some help.” (MLB.com)"

Matt Carpenter was worried also, saying this:

"“I thought he was paralyzed, I immediately thought he had broken his neck. I had 100 scenarios running through my head, and none of them were good. You instantly are thinking of all the worst possible scenarios of what could be going on out there. It’s just a horrible, horrible moment.”"

Piscotty will likely be held out for the last four games of the season. He is too valuable of an asset at this point to risk anything too major. Piscotty is batting .310 this season with seven home runs and 39 RBI’s while only playing less than half of the season. With injuries to Carlos Martinez and Yadier Molina in the last week, the Cardinals can sigh a huge relief after the diagnosis of Piscotty. One, that they will have their rookie phenom back, and two, because Piscotty is ok and intact.
