St Louis Cardinals: Updates From the Last Week

With the St. Louis Cardinals heading into early September baseball, there seems to be an endless supply of news updates. Whether it’s injured players being reactivated, or simply the club calling someone up, the updates keep flying in every few hours. So instead of individually writing them out, here are some updates and tidbits from the last week.

Two players have been reactivated from the disabled list. Both Randal Grichuk and Jon Jay have come off the disabled list and are ready for game action once again.

Jon Jay won’t likely see too much playing time. Don’t get me wrong, I like Jay a lot, but with all of the September call ups, combined with all of the rookie play from players like Stephen Piscotty, Tommy Pham, and Xavier Scruggs, there really isn’t much room for Jay on the team at the moment.

Not to mention the other guy that just got reactivated. Randal Grichuk was one of the hottest bats in the Cardinal lineup before being placed on the 15-day disabled list. However, the Cardinals have reactivated him, giving some much needed pop back in the lineup and likely pushing Jon Jay’s playing time down even further than it already was. Grichuk is still high on the rookie leader boards for doubles and home runs despite missing these past 18 games. Grichuk batted .333 before going down, with 21 doubles and 15 home runs.

On the other end, Cardinals RHP Jordan Walden has been ruled out for the year with the same shoulder issue that has been bugging him the entire season. You can read more about that here.

The Cardinals have fallen off the win wagon at the moment. They are 1-3 in their last four games, and are struggling to score runs. This happens every few weeks or so though, so look for the Cardinals to bounce back sooner than later after dropping the series against the Pirates.

Before the last four game stretch, the Cardinals were on pace to become the most winningest team in baseball history. That still could happen, but they will have to put together a win streak to do so. (keep in mind this means winning percentage not total wins)

The Cardinals are still 5.5 games up on the Pirates in the Central Standings, and 8.5 games ahead of the Cubs. The Cardinals will need to find their rhythm quick, because the series against Chicago will start tomorrow at 1:15. The Cardinals are ahead by a good margin, but you don’t want the red hot Cubs coming in and taking games from you.
