St Louis Cardinals Recap: Championship Rematch

twitterfacebookreddit

The St Louis Cardinals are beginning to have a well known rivalry against the San Francisco Giants. Mainly because they are such good teams, and always see each other in the playoffs year after year. The Cardinals proved they are still the team to beat after winning the series.

The Cardinals did not win the series in blow-out form, however. The first game saw very little offense and Stephen Piscotty had the winning RBI giving the Cardinals a 2-1 win. Yadier Molina got the offense started early with a huge home run that would find its way into Big Mac land. Michael Wacha missed his fifteenth win of the season, but still pitched a great game going seven strong and only giving up one run. Its unfortunate, but giving up one run against the Giants can cost you a win.

The Cardinals didn’t even show up the second game as far as I’m concerned. The Cardinals were shut out 2-0, and only could muster two hits. Lance Lynn once again gets minimal run support, pitching a good game. Lynn only gave up two runs on four hits, but the Cardinals couldn’t hit anything the Giants were throwing. It was not a good night for the Cardinals offense, as they would end up striking out 11 times by the night’s end.

The Cardinals won the final game thanks to their legendary man behind the plate. The Cardinals were able to keep the game tied going into the eighth inning, where Yadier Molina crushed his 100th career home-run to ensure a 4-3 win over the Giants, winning the series. Molina was the only Cardinal player to have more than one hit in yesterday’s match-up. (he got three including the home-run) Jaime Garcia struggled against the great Giants offense, but that’s the importance of run support.

The Cardinals fought tough into late games, which is very important given there is a chance they will see the Giants in the post season once again. The Cardinals lost to the Giants last year, but the Cardinals sent a message they are even better this year, and will be ready for them if the time should come.

The Cardinals are now 77-43 on the season, easily giving them the best record in baseball. They are five games ahead of the Pittsburgh Pirates and nine games ahead of the Chicago Cubs.

The Cardinals travel to San Diego today to take on the Padres tomorrow, which will begin at 9:10 central time.
