Todd Gurley Reacts to his Madden Ratings

Madden ratings have always been a fun way to check stats of every player in the NFL. Even though obviously the system isn’t in any way accurate, it still gives an interesting perspective on how players compare to each other in ways many never thought of. For example, I never realized that Adrian Peterson had more “awareness” than Demarco Murray. (just an example) Madden ratings also simplify how a player plays. For the football fans who don’t know enough to really scout a player and see how their play-style is, the Madden ratings do a great job of simplifying those play styles into an easy-to-read number. Oh, Marshawn Lynch has a 95 stiff arm? he must be good at stiff-arming! See? Simple.

More from St. Louis Rams

EA, the company that makes the Madden video games, likes to do a “reveal” every year where they reveal the ratings of different positions for the upcoming season. The first reveal they do is the rookie ratings reveal, in which St Louis Rams running back Todd Gurley got to see just how he compared to other rookies in the draft class. How did he do? See for yourself:

The Video doesn’t mention what Gurley’s actual rating is, but it is an 80 overall. Gurley is not wrong. An 80 overall for a rookie running back is not bad. In fact, anything 80 or above for a rookie is considered top-notch. Gurley gets his speed noticed, getting a 91 speed-rating, along with a very respectable 87 acceleration, and 80 elusiveness.

Gurley’s power numbers are where you have to really be excited. Gurley has a 91 trucking rating right out of the gate, and 89 stiff arm will only add to number of broken tackles that will occur. 91 Carrying means that Gurley rarely gives up the ball, which he only fumbled at Georgia a few times in his career there. The only concern of course is the injury rating. Gurley has a very low 73, meaning those who play with Gurley on Madden might be using Tre Mason quite a bit. In real life however, Gurley is expected to stay healthy due to the depth at running back and coach Fishers willingness to wait him out.

I love how Gurley reacts to his rating.  While most players were upset, or disgusted, Gurley saw the bright side. “That’s not bad for a rookie though”. This may seem like no big deal, but attitude and personality say a lot about how a player is both on and off the field.

As mentioned before, these ratings are not necessarily accurate. They do however give us a different perspective of how many of the new players will perform come August.
