St. Louis Rams Announce Jersey Numbers for 2015 Draft Class

If you’re one of those people who hates when fans care about players’ jersey numbers because it’s “just laundry”, shield your eyes, because the St. Louis Rams have announced what jersey numbers all the rookies they picked in this past weekend’s draft will be wearing for the 2015 season. In addition to just informing us about what jerseys the players will be wearing and giving fans an early opportunity to order their favorite rookie’s jersey, this info could also give us an idea about how the Rams feel about some of their current unrestricted free agents. Generally, it’s a sign that a team has cut ties with a player when they give their jersey number away, so it’s probably a good sign for free agent Joe Barksdale, the team’s starting right tackle in 2014, that the Rams didn’t give his number 72 to a rookie.

More from St. Louis Rams

Here are the numbers that the rookies will be wearing:

  • Running back Todd Gurley will be wearing number 30, his college number 3 with a zero on the end. 30 was last worn by running back Zac Stacy, who was traded to the New York Jets following the Rams’ selection of Gurley this weekend.
  • Offensive tackle Rob Havenstein will wear number 79. 79 was most recently worn by Havenstein’s likely fellow starting tackle, Greg Robinson, who will switch to his college number of 73 for the 2015 season.
  • Offensive lineman Jamon Brown will wear number 68. The Rams didn’t have a number 68 during 2014.
  • Quarterback Sean Mannion will wear number 14, which was worn last season by quarterback Shaun Hill. Hill departed St. Louis to return to his former team, the Minnesota Vikings, earlier this offseason.
  • Offensive lineman Andrew Donnal will wear number 64. That number was worn last preseason by tackle Sean Hooey, who was released from the practice squad just days into the regular season.
  • Wide receiver Bud Sasser will wear number 81, which was worn in 2014 by Kenny Britt. Britt has since switched back to number 18, which he wore with the Tennessee Titans but couldn’t take when he came to St. Louis due to the presence of Austin Pettis. It’s a bold move for the Rams to give number 81 to a rookie receiver, as arguably the greatest receiver in St. Louis Rams franchise history, Torry Holt, achieved his greatest success wearing that number.
  • Offensive guard Cody Wichmann will wear number 69. This would seem to be a pretty clear sign, if we didn’t know already, that Davin Joseph will not wear a Rams uniform this coming season.
  • Linebacker Bryce Hager will wear number 54. That number was worn in 2014 by linebacker and special teams ace Will Herring, which is probably a sign that the veteran’s short tenure with the Rams has come to an end and he won’t re-sign for 2015.
  • Defensive lineman Martin Ifedi will wear number 96. Rams fans will immediately flood every St. Louis sporting goods store to perform a DIY project on the thousands of Michael Sam number 96 jerseys which fill clearance racks across the city.
