In anticipation of Spring Training, Arch Authority will preview each position group for the St Louis Cardinals. Today we will focus on the position of shortstop.

Projected Starter: Jhonny Peralta

Potential Backup(s): Pete Kozma, Daniel Descalso

Prospects Pipeline: Patrick Wisdom

Outlook:

The St Louis Cardinals do not have a deep depth chart at shortstop. To address this depth issue, the Cardinals went out and got Jhonny Peralta. Jhonny Peralta is not as good defensively as Pete Kozma is but he will add a crucial bat to the Cardinals lineup. Pete Kozma should be motivated to be a better MLB player but he should be a very valuable bench player for the Cardinals. Daniel Descalso can also take over at shortstop if needed. There are no immediate Top 20 prospects at the shortstop position but Patrick Wisdom is a prospect who could get a shot at shortstop. He is projected by MLB.com to be at the majors in 2014 so if the Cardinals wanted to develop a prospect at shortstop, Patrick Wisdom could be the guy.
