In anticipation of Spring Training, Arch Authority will preview each position group for the St Louis Cardinals. Today we will focus on the position of second base.

Projected Starter: Kolten Wong

Potential Backup(s): Matt Carpenter, Pete Kozma, Mark Ellis and Daniel Descalso

Prospect Pipeline: Breyvic Valera

Outlook:

The second base position is pretty loaded. Matt Carpenter is making the transition to third base to replace David Freese who is now with the Los Angeles Angels. Kolten Wong is going to take over as starter at second base. He would need to produce to stay the starter at second base but as far as the St Louis Cardinals are concerned, he has enough time to develop into the all-star second baseman that Cardinals fans hope he becomes. Mark Ellis and Daniel Descalso are insurance policies so just in case Kolten Wong is injured or underperforms, the Cardinals are ready.

If Kolten isn’t a spectacular talent that others are projecting him to be, Breyvic Valera is in the pipeline. He is the 16th in the Top 20 prospects ranking and is likely going to begin 2014 in Springfield. The second baseman position is in a great position for the St Louis Cardinals.
