Defense is a major key in any sport. This is especially true in hockey where you have 6 out of your 20 man roster as defensemen. Because of that, it’s important to keep your top defensemen and the St. Louis did that today with the resigning of Alex Pietrangelo.

Alex Pietrangelo receive a 7-year deal worth $45 million according to SI’s NHL division.

This is huge for the Blues. Great defensemen can last a very long time in the league. Getting him on a 7 year deal ensures the Blues will have him for a good portion of his prime. The important statistics for a defensemen is plus/minus and time on ice. Last season, Pietrangelo ranked 13th among all defensemen with 25 minutes on the ice. He was even on plus/minus last season but for the previous two seasons, he was +34. That’s huge for one player. There were concerns that Pietrangelo would not resign with the Blues but credit both sides for getting the deal done when yesterday, it looked like the deal might not get done.
