On Friday, the St. Louis Cardinals put Jake Westbrook on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain. The Cardinals recalled Carlos Martinez from Memphis (AAA) to take his roster spot. Tyler Lyons will be the starter on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds. Beyond that game, the Cardinals have no definite starter for Westbrook’s spot in the rotation.

The future is uncertain for Jake Westbrook for this season. He will come off the DL in September which means he will likely stay with the Cardinals through September likely out of the bullpen when the roster goes to 40 men. After the regular season ends, I doubt he makes the 25 man roster in the postseason. He is too much of a liability in the playoffs. Obviously, this will be the question mark for the rest of the 2013 season. It’s not a big deal in my opinion because if you can have 4 solid starters for the playoffs, that’s all you need.
